She and Her Girls (山花烂漫时)

Concept Statement

She and Her Girls is based on the true story of Zhang Guimei, a teacher who witnessed many girls in the mountainous regions of southwestern China being forced by their families to leave school because of poverty and deeply rooted gender inequality. Some, as young as fourteen or fifteen, were pushed into early marriage, motherhood, or work. Against tremendous odds, she founded China’s first fully tuition-free high school for girls and helped change their lives through education.

Although the story is rooted in hardship, the series does not glorify suffering. Instead, it presents a story of hope, female strength, resilience, and vitality. This title sequence reflects that spirit through illustration-driven storytelling, symbolic imagery, and a visual language inspired by nature. Through fresh, natural colors and imagery associated with growth and renewal, the sequence conveys both the weight of the girls’ experiences and the hope, energy, and possibility that emerge from them.
